Mobile operating systems and horror are a bad and unsustainable mix. The reason for this phenomenon is the very small range of future action, which is a limitation for developers. It is for this reason that owners of handheld devices will have to wait for a true horror flick that will make even the most ardent fear fan’s heart go cold for a very long time. But sometimes quite ambitious products are released which, however briefly, allow you to quench your thirst for thrills. Knock-knock is one of these. For a very long time it has existed only for desktop devices, and for mobile platforms it has reached only recently.
Players who are waiting for the usual clichéd fun should be warned straight away that Knock-knock does not have it. From the very first second of the game you’ll have to completely forget about what adequacy and tranquility means – now the player will find only chaos, destruction and absolute incomprehension. If in most projects the crazier the better, in this game the opposite is true.
Even if a lot of millions are not invested into the game, the player’s mind is greatly affected by the terrifying atmosphere, scary sounds and non-standard storyline. For classic horror games such elements are commonplace, but not here – in “Knock-knock” everything is elevated to perfection. And in this situation, it’s unclear exactly what feelings to experience.
As soon as the game is launched on a portable device, the user will be immediately horrified by what is happening, and in the truest sense of the word. Everything is frightening: the main character is a mysterious Resident, who looks and thinks like a madman, everything happens in a nauseatingly scary house with a few dozen rooms, the constant turning on and off of lights and the need to constantly hide from monsters.
It’s a game that can be played by the incredibly lucky, or by someone with an out-of-the-box mentality. It is, at its core, a very strange game. It is not only the setting that is frightening, but the lack of clarity and the surreality of what is happening here and now to the protagonist.
A person who tries Knock-knock will not be able to call this project a game, as it is an interactive story with no beginning, middle or normal ending. The essence of the game is reduced to three actions:
This all takes place under the constant gaze of the main character and his stories about his work and himself. The main draw of the game is the understatement. The player never learns the whole truth.
The Knock-knock game is not suitable for all users. It is unlikely that there is a large number of people who have fully understood the meaning of the game, believed in its rather macabre story and found a new life purpose. Most will simply try to quickly forget the game. Some users have a completely different opinion, believing that the game is ahead of its time.
